A GST notice arrives with the weight of the state behind it, and the instinct is either to panic or to ignore it. Both are mistakes. A notice is the opening of a process — and how you respond in the first two days shapes everything that follows.
Read the notice for what it actually asks
Notices differ enormously — from a routine request for information to the first step toward serious proceedings. The correct response depends entirely on which you have received. Misreading a routine query as a crisis wastes goodwill; misreading a serious notice as routine forfeits your position.
The first task is diagnosis, calmly and precisely. That is where counsel earns its fee.
Preserve, don't improvise
Do not send an off-the-cuff reply, and do not alter records. Preserve the paper trail, gather the underlying documents, and respond within the timeline through considered representation. A measured, well-evidenced reply resolves the majority of matters at the first stage.
